Won’t you get sick of each other?
Yes, we will. It’s part of the fun. We get along pretty well and we’ve lived together for more than 19 years through Jack’s adolescence and Jon’s childishness, so we thought spending 6 months in a confined space would be easy. It’s going to be amazing experiencing all of this and it’s going to be amazing experiencing it with someone so close. We expect some tension (mostly over the music) but there will be more important and interesting things to see and do than focus on fighting with each other.
What do you actually take with you on a trip like this?
Well, we’ll have two bags of clothes each. One for hot climates (South-East Asia) and one for cold climates (Central Asia-Europe). Apart from clothes we have two sleeping bags, two first-aid kits, a methylated sprits stove, two cameras, a computer, a tub full of medicine, some tools, a box of koala keyrings to hand out along the way, and a massive amount of maps.
How many gadgets have you been sucked in to taking?
Aaaaaaagh, weak spot here. Once you tell people you will run a blog, then that means the laptop - or you spend ages of your exotic trip sitting in daft internet cafes mixing with other travellers instead of being out and mixing it with the locals. So we decided to take the laptop. Then you have to add an inverter to run it off the car. Then what about those new fangled modems that give you broadband anywhere there is a phone signal…. and an antenna for that matter. The cameras needed a tripod, didn’t they, and the satellite phone was pretty much non-negotiable. Then the EPIRB. The battery charger for the rechargeable batteries. I think we need a trailer just for the cables and plugs.
What if you get sick?
We have done a St John Ambulance course, and have one of their very complete big bags of ’stuff’. We hope we do not use it. We have both had check-ups. We have various magic pills and lotions and potions in case of most foreseeable threats. But you know, you can get sick staying at home too….
Is it safe?
No. But nor is it particularly dangerous, we think. Plenty of people are travelling the globe, many way further off the beaten track than we are. A look at the blogs and websites in the ‘resources’ tab of this website will inspire and inform. Safety and security are rarely an issue for any of the people whose journeys you can share.
