Hi ,

At last, our book telling the story of the www.MelbourneToLondon.com trip is now at the printers.

In full colour, with hundreds of photos and jammed with memorabilia, the 350 pages take you with us over our six months roadtrip adventure driving from our front gate in inner Melbourne to Piccadilly Circus in London.

In bookshops nationally from August 1 – nicely timed for Father’s Day – it is called ‘From Here To There’ and we can now proudly offer a sneak preview of the cover…

From Here to There - Jon Fain and Jack Faine

ABC Books have done a terrific job bringing our words to life and we hope you enjoy reliving our journey.

We will let you know more as release day approaches,

Best wishes,

Jon and Jack

Dear Jon & Jack, I was only thinking about your book the other day but thought that with the hectic life you lead Jon (I don’t know about you Jack) that it would be some time away. Congratulations to you both on getting it finished and I look forward to once again sharing your adventure second hand.

    Kind regards.

    Hi Jon and Jack,

Well done! It’s terrific to see your creativity and that you had a safe journey.

I was talking to Olivier yesterday (French) and he was wondering what happened to you both, last time we saw you we were witnessing skinning a goat in Turkmenistan, so now I can tell him about your book.

I was also working on a book during the same trip, although it is a little different!

    http://www.refugeeoflove.com for my book.

I remember you guys throwing around an AFL footy in Uzbekistan. Cool stuff.

    Stay healthy and happy!

    Warm Regards,
    Mick Bromage.

Congratulations Jon and Jack! What a mighty effort! As a writer, I know what a mammoth task you have undertaken to produce this book in the time you have. To hold the finished product in your hands will give you both a great sense of achievement and satisfaction.
    Well done!

    kind regards

Hi, I was sent a link to your article in the Sydney Morning Herald, nice read and I shall be buying the book as well.

I am a fellow Aussie, living in Thailand and we had been going to plan a road trip into China and hopefully Mongolia.

I had read many reports and many stories that it was basically not allowed unless you were accompanied as mentioned, but the cost was ridiculous and as we would be already 4 people, possibly 5 in a dual cab pickup, we would not have the option of including the guide with us in our car and would have to pay for a second vehicle as escort….again, this was a huge cost.

I was wondering if you could put me in touch via email with your guide to discuss these possibilities further.

We are currently planning a drive from Thailand to Oz in the middle of next year over the kids end of year school holiday break.

Once again, congratulations on a fine story so far.

    Sam.

    Hi Jon and Jack

I read your book over the weekend (another diversion from the thesis). What an adventure, very readable, wouldn’t do it myself in a pink fit…I had caught you (Jon) a few times on 774 during your trip…with the wonderful Trev (along with Rod, the overnight show is the only good thing about suffering from insomnia) and also on Derek.

By coincidence I went to a film last night at MIFF called ‘Border’…set on the Azerbaijan-Armenia border after the war….very very moving, the last scene is still etched in my mind and makes me feel very sad (thesis shmesis!). The very next chapter of your book that I read when I got home after the movie was your time in that same part of the world. So I wanted to let you know about the film. And then when you arrived in Turkey and commented on the smiles on people’s faces…that was one of the most striking things in the film…no one smiled…not even the groom when he was being married….like I said thesis shmesis….

    Thanks for the great read,

    Jenny

    Dear Jon and Jack,

I have just finished reading “From Here To There” and I wish to thank you for such a frank and refreshing account of your adventure. Your stories have no doubt planted to seed of adventure in many and I hope one day to spend the sort of time you did together with my own children.

    Many thanks

    Hi,

I bought your book today and have already read half of it, execellent read, driving from Ireland to Australia is something i have been talking about for the last 10+ yrs (only 29yrs old) (now live in Australia for the last 5 yrs), my uncle and is wife and another couple drove from ireland to newcastle in new south wales in the late 70’s in those days they were able go thru afganistan but couldnt get into China. Since then i’ve always had a fasination with going overland from Ireland to Australia or in reverse.

Anyway i would really appreciate it if you could email me an approx total cost? we are planning a trip from Australia to Ireland overland next yr my preference is to drive however myt girlfriend wishes to go via trans siberian etc to save $$ so need to weigh up overall costs of both.i have already done some research on the guide in China and have spoken to the irish guys that went from Sydney to Dublin in a Hummer ant the irish guys that went from Dublin to Syd in a 316 bmw

Well Done and any info on costs would be greatly appreciated

    Sean

I have just returned from six weeks abroad and opened your email saying the long awaited book has been published. I thought you would like to know that our local ABC shop in little Bacchus Marsh is sold out and I am now number 18 on the waiting list for a new consignment in September. Congratulations to you both.

Guys I purchased your book prior to a stint in hospital. After my operation I read it from cover to cover in 1 long night & I did not need any pain killers as I was enjoying being on the road with you both! Regards John Westwood

Great book and very inspiring. Have been travelling off/on for most of my life with a spell of living overseas so I am avid reader of travel books. Your book is one of the best, the way i believe travel books should be written with plenty of pictures so the reader get a feel of your trip (i get a little suspect when an author describes a trip around the world or to some far flung place and there are NO supporting pictures).

Good work Jon & Jack !!!!!

  15. By Nicole September 5th, 2010 at 5:44 pm

    Hi Jon & Jack,

Managed to score a “signed” copy of your book at the local bookshop and presented it to my husband (together with our two sons) for Fathers Day. Who knows, you may have inspired another father & son to take a similar trip to yours in the near future.

    Cheers Nicole

    Hi John,
Bet you didn’t think to take a simple hockey stick for protection. Fancy letting the boy go to UOM - what is happening to the Monash Graduates?
Hoping to catch the book soon - not available in the local ABC shop. Keep up the good work.

    Hi guys,

After walking half of Sydney then Melbourne, I evetually found a copy of your book at Melbourne airport….(I know, I know….what an unconventional way to travel!!!) and I just thought I would let you know that I spent the next 5 hours sitting on a plane totally engrossed in your fantastic tale!!! I don’t think I have ever read such a wonderful, moving story. I was laughing out loud one minute (wearing earphones on a plane=very loud laughing!) and then crying the next…(the story of the blind child was heartwrenching).

Your book is so well written that I feel like part of the family who came with you on your travels! Thank you:)

I look forward to the next adventure!

    Regards

    Kylie

    Hi Jon & Jack

I just finished your book which was received as a birthday/fathers day present. I loved it and found it very stimulating. The cost of the trip is pretty scary. I think you were very fortunate that you did not get lost or have some serious breakdowns at times though. Well you need luck in life. Thanks for writing it and thanks Jack for the photos…they are very good. The luckiest of the lucky is pretty right John. Cheers Geoff Lee, Melbourne

    Hi there Jon and Jack
I bought your book on a recent trip to Darwin (I live and work in Gunbalanya, amazing part of Australia isn’t it?!). The thing that caused me to pick up the book was the picture of your Prado, being a fellow proud 120 series Prado owner of course my curiosity got the better of me so I bought the book. I’m only up to the Chinese border crossing part of the book but I must say I’m loving every single page. Well done on a well written (thus far) book. Cheers

    Hi John and Jack,

I’ve just finished reading your book tonight - what a great, epic read! Several times I had to put it down and take a deep breath. Very well written - insightful, humourous, thoughtful and thought-provoking, intelligent and sensitive. Well done. I’d love to do a similar trip one day in my 1979 Peugeot 504!

    Hi John and Jack,

Just finished your book, one word - fantastic !
thank you so much for sharing your experiences so well presented it was like being there.
Sure seems we do have a good life here compared to some places.

have just finished the book 12/10
    amazing crazy -brave
We have been to Russia ,Eastern Europe & China albeit in the tame places and realize how easy it is with a guide to deal with the paperwork .

We also learned a bit about those places and the recent history and society and your comments resonated with what we saw also

    Hi Jon & Jack,

Half way through this incredible journey, just one question?
When will Jack be writting his own book, no disrespect Jon but his view on the trip will be so far different to yours and id love to read his full version of events.

Having travelled our lovely planet on numerous occasions with our three teenage daughters it is amazing how they see and veiw things differently from us parents.

    Back to the book now!!

    Dave

Have just finished the book and enjoyed it immensely. What made it all the more so was the fact that we bought the audiobook AND the hard copy, and listened to the audiobook whilst driving from Adelaide to Sydney and back. The audiobook is read by Jon and Jack themselves, so the pleasure of hearing Jon’s voice coming through the car stereo again, even in rural NSW, was fantastic, but combining it with reading chapters in between listening, and hearing THEIR intonations, emphases, and their quoted words in their own voices was a wonderful added dimension to what was already a great story and a great read. Word of mouth is a great ambassador, and many of our friends and colleagues have indicated they will be buying the book on the reviews we have given them. I would like to think that the audiobook will be serialised on one of ABC’s radio programs at some stage (Radio National’s ‘Book Reading’ for example).
For those that followed the blog and read the book, check out audible.co.uk for the audio version - a great buy and a wonderful complementary addition to the book itself.

Just coming to the end of your book (audio) absolutely amazed and impressed, a great adventure!

whens the next trip? are you both back resident in Melbourne now?

I have just finished this book. What a marvellous trip you both had. It was wonderful that your son went to spend father and son time together, and see this wonderful world. Its great that you had no trouble, car wise and with other people. Just goes to show all over the world we are the same.

    Hi Jon
Fantasic to meet you at Stonnington Library, Malvern yesterday. I loved your universal truths and hearing, once again, that it’s all about the journey and not the destination. Great travelogue.
    Thanks, Linda

Hi Jon…I used to live in Melb. but now retired in Qld. listened to your audio of the trip on our local radio, and have just finished reading your book………..in a few words….Marvellous, fantastic, well scripted, great photos, and….
    congratulations !!

    Hi guys
I am most of the way through listening to your audio book during my work-related travels around the traps of country NSW. It’s a great listen (read), my only disappointment being that of your own such feeling about Mongolia. I went there myself for a few weeks last year and loved it! Mind you I went in their summer and therefore the ger camps, lakes etc were comfortable and not too cold at all.
I am now inspired to go to some of the ‘Stans though I might just strangle someone during the border crossings …
Thanks for sharing your travel memories

    cheers
