We stopped for lunch in Katherine NT. We knew we were just a few hours from Darwin but we were starving. We circumnavigated the town and settled on the supermarket as the most likely source of fresh food. We bought some fruit, an avocado, some bread and settled down outside the Visitors Centre in the shade for a picnic lunch. A tanned fellow on a bicycle was under the next tree. How gutsy, i thought, cycling in this weather. And with all that gear he must be riding a fair distance. Was he heading from Darwin south? or to Darwin north?

Jeff James is in fact on the final leg of a 15 month journey on his bike from Barcelona to Melbourne. His website tells more www.whereonearthisjeff.com and is a most entertaining read. He loved having people to chat to, especially as we picked his brains about the ferries between indonesian islands that we will soon be visiting. If you see him on the road, make time for a chat and congratulate him on a truly epic ride.

My brother in law finished his mid life crisis trip along the silk road last year, may be some interesting info on his site for later in your journey. Cheers

People you meet along the way can be fascinating. Take the time to talk to them and for everyone who thinks they are ordinary, you will find out that they are extraordinary.
Sights are always there and you can get pictures or see them anytime, but people in a location are ephemeral. Take them while you can, pick their brains and extract all the information possible which may prove useful later.
Keep up the good work - the Katherine Supermarket is good for food and there is also a Subway in the town - but the Supermarket is cheaper, as it will be throughout your journey.

Hi J. J. My wife left a reply 2 days ago, I was wondering if you have time to answer all the fan mail you get. We also had lunch at the same place a few years ago. We did learn about a book written by a pioneer lady called We of the Never Never and I thought we had it tough.Keep on trekking Wally. J.

On way to Darwin a day after the V8 cars were just there with a record crowd.. I would advise to be careful for rev heads imitating their stars on highway. If you see a hotted up commodore which appears to rapidly approaching on wrong side of road.. run ..lol

    Howdy Darlngs,
we wound up the windows and drove through Tennant Creek……. something about the bars on all the main street windows, let alone eating dinner there…….however we stayed for a while in Katherine, Stuart’s daughter and family lived there……the supermarket accommodated a snapshot of the “situation”……so fab for youse yo meet a fellow traveller and to get a comparison.
So…., Darwin is the next “big smoke” - apparently you can get a great laksa down an arcade on a certain day……….,
I’m addicted already to checking out what you’re experiencing……tell us everything…..the car is your home, love it as much as you can; how is it packed? What’s under the seats? Any pics?……….on our last Europe tour I wished I could do to do virtual reality back to bed and loved ones each night……….even just to see it. How are you sleeping………….? Yoo Hoo Jack…….??? kisses and prayers….
PS…Christo self confessed nerd star with all first class honours-mid yeqr results….mama is such a bragger…….xxxxxxxxxxxxJW

    A message for the POD
Time to get serious now Poddy
    No more antics
No more spitting out wires, creating smells or smoke
No more interference with the electronic attachments
You have caused such stress to J and J
You have caused anguish to your followers
    Enough is enough
You are soon leaving the safety of your home
You have a belly full of fuel
    You have attentive carers
    You are the most -
    Phenomenal
    Omnipotent
    Driving-machine
    south of the North Pole
So when the ignition is turned
Fire up without a stutter, croak, tremble or groan
Pick yourself up by your bootstraps
Gather up your components and gadgets
Tune in, get into gear, and take up the role of your moniker

    Ciao

    Hi Jon and Jack

I am sitting by the heater in Tasmania at the moment, reading about your trip with great envy.

Very much enjoying your tales, and looking forward to reading more.

    Best wishes Leanne

I was working around Broome way last week, and thought of you guys while extricating a landcruiser ute from a bottomless sandpit. The cruiser (which belonged to a company I was working for) had spent its whole life underground in a mine, was rusty as a rusty thing, but ran faultlessly.
Stay out of big sand, and continue your epic. Adrenaline is OK

    Hi guys,
We found Catherine to be a friendly place, a little oasis between Darwin and Alice. We over-all spent about four days there and surrounding areas.
    Take care guys.

Dear J and J your trip is making me very envious.Tip from mine ,purchase some big black beards for Iran ,dont offer A$ change at border with black market boys can’t miss them, visa not accepted in 01,long trouses and long sleeved shirts. The people are welcoming but don’t be too assertive, agent’s often a help to get across border crossings.I hope you have a football with you we found if things are getting you down at the borders a game of football often helps, everyone closes up plays a game and then the processing is amazingly fast, entertainment I guess.Block ice is available and a plastic rubbish bin will work as an esky then you can wash in the water.Always check the seal when purchasing water in the shop often bottles are refilled keep your rubbish for the kids. When you stop they appear from nowhere they love stickers and pens also colouring in books.WHO bores along roads keep a look out.Cheers chaps.Marie Molan.

It’s great to catch up again and to read all the notes. So pleased to hear you are at last “at sea”
I went a couple of years ago from Melbourne to Oakland on a container ship, it was quite an experience! I was the only passenger! Quite a shock, but it was a restful voyage and just what I needed at the time,at age 75. The crew were from Tuvulu and reis was the main dish for 27 days. But enough of me.This is your trip.
I hope you can get to Turkey and Greece, two very interesting countries, get to Goremi in Turkey and see the ancient caves, where the Christians hid and of course Gallipoli, there is an excellent youth hostel just across the Dardenells. I will be tuning in to read all your news. Good Luck and safe travelling.

    Jon and Jack,
So glad you have met one of us cycle tourists! There is no greater way to see either our magnificent county or Europe. The experience you are having is even more magnified ‘cos you have to interact with the locals, and the pace of travel is so slow compared with how we normally live. Husband and I (both in our 60’s) have some 10,000km of dirt and road under the wheels cycle touring and are off to Europe again next year. Glad to have found your site and will enjoy hearing of your adventures!

    Hi Jack, Re cockfighting story.
Barbaric - Yes, Gruesome - Yes, Ilegal - Yes, Exciting - No.
How do you reasonably justify your emotional interest in watching that sort of game.
Perhaps you have some regrets now.
