To be sung to a Sarah Vaughan song …. And I can’t remember the name of it but it suddenly just came to me when they told me of their predicament!!!

They hurried through the party
Hurried through farewells
Left before the sun coming up was through
Why did they hurry through the party
And hurry through farewells
To leave some time for dawdling
To find the barge in Darwin is cancelled now

Having left Sunday morning they drove at rocket speed from Melbourne to Port Augusta in one day. They were intending to arrive in Darwin on Thursday to meet a barge to Dili.

Monday morning they found out the barge from Darwin to Dili has been cancelled and there may not be another one to catch for ten days. So they are stuck literally in the middle of nowhere. Jon has described their locality as “four fifths of ….. all to see or do”. I think the highlight of their day was a detour to Woomera.

To make the situation even worse for them all the 21st century gadgetry that Jon has accumulated over the last six months isn’t accessible. He is unable to communicate with the world because the satellite thingy won’t work with another thingamajig.

Jon has probably broken out in hives having to live with relevance deprivation. Jack will definately be going spare because he can’t get access to the Age On Line which is his morning ritual.

I am left with sole access to their blog. At this rate receiving my version of their trip could be seriously boring.

Ahh this is the travel spirit asking them to subvert the notion of time, forget aggendas and intineries and just go with the flow!

Not good news for the boys! I guess things can only get better. One plus is it can open up an opportunity to experience something that wasn’t part of their plans.
Jan, if they are looking for some adventure to kill time in Darwin, I can put them onto a friend of mine who would be more than happy to accommodate them, take them metal detecting for gold, and weather permitting out in his boat for a spot of barra fishing?

    Just let me know?

    Ray.

Love to be a fly on the wall (in the car), Jon you are now in the real world, real men…the salt of the earth. I hope a bit rubs of on you. I love to see the city boys get a dose of the out back and the realities that it brings. Good Luck I will be following your trip and (developemnt as a person.
This is an amazing trip for Jack>

Lol! …and “very interesting” (spoken in Maxwell Smart’s voice)… Well, maybe they will just have to get out the camera and FIND the interesting bits (They could blog ‘em later when technology decides to check in again)… I think your ‘blogging’s’ great Jan X:-) Cheers, Vicki (Melbourne)

You are doing great Jan. Thanks for keeping us up to date so far. Just keep in mind during your lonely times that you will see them both in Paris in December. I don’t think they will be lost for things to do in the ‘Territory’ while waiting for the Barge. It’s a great place.
    Take care

Ah the joys of the open road, ha!, good luck guys. I have done Variety Bash stuff wish I was in the jump seat. Driving the car back might be interesting, go the road less travelled, Andy

Oh dear, brings to mind the idiom…the best-laid plans of mice and men go oft astray…
I hope they took a pack of playing cards to while away the time ;-)

Oh Jan, you make me chuckle. I can imagine how Jon is feeling at this moment… I’m assuming he is a bit of a control freak and suddenly he has no control!! I am quite happy to read your blogs for the next six months. They are very entertaining. Thanks. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the updates, Jan. Why am I not surprised that things have gone skewiff at the Oz end? The barge was out of anyone’s control, but wasn’t the communcations system tested beforehand? Poor guys?

I am sure this is just the start of some hectic and frustrating times ahead, but isn’t that what its all about - overcoming adversity to reach that final goal.

Wait till they start meeting “officialdom” in places like Vietnam, China and Russia.

I am sure that they will get there. I hope they are keeping notes to make it easier for those who follow. There has to be a second book just on working through official paperwork.

Keep at it boys. We are with you in spirit.

Has anyone thought of adding a geo-blogging element to the sidebar of the blog? It could look something like this using an online map

As long as you’re in control, Jan …

    Mh,
maybe that mob from this weirdo party is right and we need to build a TransWorldTunnel to Indonesia (with a turn off deep under the sea to East Timor).Couldn’t they get “Chitti Chitti Bang Bang” instead of a Land Rover ?

Hmmmmmmmmm… so we have the proof — even the plans of mice and men can go astray.

Good luck, smile, push on, from the comfort of my logfire I can only wish you well.

    George.

    Hey Jan

Send your song to the Coodabeens. I’m sure Champs could make something of it. Make it a metaphor for the Lions (just for the sake of reelevance).
