Several people have assumed that the car is like a third character in this story. That it [she?] has a personality. The it [he?] needs a name.

When the Prado was purchased from Rob and Robin it was registered YEA in the ACT and was nicknamed Yoda. Because it is a Toy-yoda. And the Star Wars connection is entirely apt. Wise, extra powers, formidable stamina.

But do we grace the car with a name? and what will it be. Suggestions welcome.

And to answer the question about what happens to it when we get to the UK, unless we find someone who wants to turn it around and drive it home, it rides on a ship all the way back… and then gets sold! I know, it will be like losing a friend. But if we do not bring it back, we breach the conditions of the Carnet, and besides it is not going to be an easy car to sell in the UK as the Prado equivalent over there from my quick inquiries has different specs so it would be a bit of an orphan. And they do not like 4WDs in London. And to sell a car in a hurry is not the way to get a decent return!

    Hi guys

Reckon the car definately needs a name. Don’t think it needs a new one though, are cars like boats…bad luck to change the name. I think Yoda has a good back story and suits the purpose.

Suggestions from us are fine but in the end the name has to come from Jon and Jack.

And even then they can only name it after a couple of weeks of travelling.

It’s during these first few weeks that they will bond with the vehicle and the vehicle will show it’s true personallity (and it’s gender).

My FaVoRiTe childhood car was an FB Holden named “BESSY” And she was a “she” and still holds a place in my hEaRt and our home has a name too sooo… Better to appease the “traveling gods” and stick with a womans name methinks X:-)… and hey we all “grow into” our names eventually anyway don’t we? (But then again don’t listen to me l’m always giving inanimate objects names and talking to them… It drives my kids crazy Lol!) X;-) Vicki

    Hi Guys

How about calling the car WIM, part of the registration number, and because it was a “wim” of Jon’s to do this trip
    cheers

    Hi Jays,

    “Yoda” works for me…
But a small suggestion would be after you own intials, the no gender specific “Jay” or “JJ”?

PS. A friend of mine with a Prado suggested you take a spare set of rear shocks and possibly a set of springs. The penalty for carrying all that fuel in those huge tanks is a lot of weight over the rear suspension.

PPS. Our Citroen C3 Pluriel is “Black Betty” & our Ford Territory is “The Big T”.

    Enjoy,
    Staeven

    Hi guys.
I agree with Andrew, the name has to come from you guys, Jock.. oops.
Then I also agree with Vicky, better to appease the “traveling gods” and stick with a womans name for the travel from Melbourne to London, hench.. MeL?
    Happy travels.

  9. By Sajjad June 23rd, 2008 at 12:03 pm

    Hi Jon
Wish you all the best. I believe I better start saving now if I want to do some thing similar with my son who is 5.

My suggestion for the name is “Jan”. Well as you have said, “First and last, and more than everyone else put together : Jan - we would still be dreaming about it otherwise.”

She should be there with you in your journey.

I think that the car will name itself - just give it a week or two - as someone said above, you need to understand it’s personality.

Have a great trip, will miss you on 774, but will log in here regularly.

  12. By Fee June 23rd, 2008 at 7:53 pm

    Hi Jon and Jack
I think you should call your car “Grace” because no matter what adventures you have, good, bad or bloody disasterous, at least you can say you did it with “Grace”!

  13. By Gary June 23rd, 2008 at 10:03 pm

Definitely needs a name. For goodness sake! You’re going to be travelling companions, sharing experiences, and supporting and caring for each other.

But you need to name the car now, before you leave, then announce it to all. Maybe YODA is ‘the one’ - you have to feel that it’s right.

  14. By Jane from Lang Lang June 23rd, 2008 at 10:44 pm

Have been reflecting on the name - I think either Priscilla or Edna would be appropriate.

    Bon Voyage.

Just re watched an episode of Top Gear where they drive across Africa.
There can only be one name for your vehicle which has the necessary heritage………..OLIVER!

    Hi Jon & Jack
This has got nothing to do with car names but I can’t see where else to post.
If you need a friendly face and assistance (with anything) in Kashgar ask for Elvis (elvisablimit@yahoo.com) at the Old City Restaurant. He’ll also show you the town through Uyghur eyes (and try to sell you a carpet!). If you are ahead of schedule I would suggest turning left and heading over the Khunjerab Pass and down the Karakoram Highway at least as far as Gilgit. Hunza is indeed magical and lives up to the mythology. But I am biased.

The car must have a name. How about “The POD” (as a permanent reminder of the “music” that Jack is selecting!)
Your morning program and the jibes with Red will be missed - happy travelling and just have the time of your lives.

    Wish I was there already.!!!

Jon, I will miss your presence on 774, but, as you will agree, the designate ‘fill-ins’ are excellent, thank goodness.

Jack, this will be the start of the best part of your life. All you have to do is “stay on a roll”!

The car’s name: FAINE’D HEART, of course.

Bon Voyage and, a safe return to your native land, should you so desire.

  21. By trevor June 24th, 2008 at 1:50 pm

Given its a Prado the name has to be either blando or vanilla.

Btw good luck with those 17 inch wheels. Hope you’ve got two on the back.

  22. By Katie June 24th, 2008 at 2:08 pm

You MUST have a name. Or else why would the car have any need to remain faithful to you both on the trip? And aren’t cars all gals, like boats? I don’t have a suggestion, because it must come from your creative hearts…but The Car Must Have A Name.

  23. By Robert Bryce June 24th, 2008 at 3:00 pm

Yep it needs a name. We had an FJ40 years ago and it was “Tojo”.Haven’t got a name for the LC 200 -yet.

Have a fantastic trip and will observe from a distance.

    Hi John,

Good luck with the trip. I am sure others have already suggested this, but you might want to think about having an auto electrician fit an extra battery to your vehicle given the dependency on some of the electronics that might be connected through the cigarette lighter. Safe travels. Charles

  27. By Nige June 24th, 2008 at 11:27 pm

if you need any Prado specific info, try http://www.pradopoint.com

As for a name, that might have to evolve but ‘wim’ seems good. We have a Prado (which we did a 1/2 lap of Oz in last year) but it hasn’t received a name. Our previous Subaru was the ‘Subi’, our Clubsport is the ‘Clubby’ and our Monaro is the ‘Munro’ We’re not very inventive!

Looking forward to following your travels.

    Cheers, Nige

  28. By Cecile June 25th, 2008 at 8:37 am

The car does need a name! My friends Pippa and Florent did a similar trip last year and they couldn’t have done it without Big Mamma. See their adventure on http://www.unamis.net/Home2Home/HomeEng.htm
    Good luck!

  29. By Lucy June 25th, 2008 at 8:44 am

Just a passing thought for a car name… “MELON”

… MELbourne LONdon.. and almost the opposite of a LEMON.. Guess you can never be sure about cars, no matter how well you prepare!

Good fortune and safe journeying guys!

  31. By John June 27th, 2008 at 11:36 am

    Hi Jon & Jack,

Good luck on your trip, you’ll have a great time.

I second WIM, it is a common male name in Holland.
    Cheers

  32. By Ros Crompton June 27th, 2008 at 11:54 am

    G’day Jon & Jack,
I’m sure you’re ignoring the condescending remark about Prados being bland. I’m on my second one and have taken it into lots of rough nooks & crannies from coast to coast, north to south, east to west. Given all this, it gave itself a name, “The Truck”. A name will evolve.
Love travelling on terra firma …and slowly so you know where you’ve been!
Enjoy the changes that happen to you both.
    Best of everything, Ros.

  33. By Ann June 27th, 2008 at 12:02 pm

    Hi Jon and Jack
yes yes, you have to name the car and being a boat owner - I would keep YODA - don’t forget to put a map of Australia on the side and paint in the route as you go - like all good Aussies.
I will miss you on the radio Jon but will be following you and Jack on this website - a great idea.

    Hi Jon and Jack
We did the trip from London to Melbourne in 1979/80 in an orange combi. After a few weeks out we named her the Bodge-it Bus. Enough said! But we got here in the end. A fantastic trip - I still can’t believe we actually did it. Through France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, Kashmir, Nepal, India, ferry to Malaysia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, ferry to Fremantle. Trip included our beloved combi being confiscated by customs on the Nepal/India border because of ‘problems’ with the carnet! Happy memories. Have a wonderful trip. Look forward to following your progress. The very best of luck to you both. Sara and Gerry

  36. By Tim June 27th, 2008 at 4:40 pm

    Hi Jack and Jon,

I’m sure after a few days on the road you guys will come up with a great name for the Prado. Look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Happy trails. Keep the shiny side up and the muddy side down.

    Tim.

I see that Yoda’s Official Label is William, no? WIM145? He does look very stately and I think William for formal occasions is quite suitable.

Good Luck and Safe Journey. With Australia behind you, I know things will go well. Regards.

Gulliver seems a good name to me (with obvious connections).
    Safe trip.

Once you have all had the opportunity to bond, a name will become evident, one might say automatic.

Have a fabulous and safe adventure!

    Guys,

    I like Nellie because :

*If you treat her right, she’ll never let you down.
*She’ll go as high or as low as possible.
*Like her equine namesakes, she’ll do exactly what she wants to do at times ;)
*She’s got four on the floor most of the time
*She needs a good feed (OK, it’s diesel, not hay) and a bit of TLC occasionally.
*Like Dame Nellie, she’s got class, if only because you two are with her.

    Just my thoughts.

You realise that the end of this trip will be just the beginning?

    Best wishes,

    Ian.

    Ofcourse Jon.
We completed an around Australia journey last year in 144 days. Our chariot was Fosester GT…champaigne pink…was a constant in journey and had a character of it’s own…simply refered to as ‘baby’.

“Boris” for no particular reason but it sounds good.

  45. By John and Rita July 16th, 2008 at 10:54 pm

    Hi Jon and Jack,
After a long discussion with my hubby we came up with a name for the car–Hercules–.
The car has to be very good for you, but also strong and reliable…like HERKULES.
Good luck with your adventure,we will follow your route with great envy.

    Hi Jon and Jack
I returned from Kahzakstan last week and on a recent trip to charing canyon’s along the silk road, and came to the conclusion you may not be aware of the 3rd lane driving concept in Kahzaktstn whereby unlike here in Australia where we wait for a space in the trafic, they constantly overtake while oncoming trafic heads for the sides of the road.
I hope you have a great and safe trip
    kind regards
    David F
PS. dont go to the public toilets!!!

    Hi Jon and Jack,
    The trip sounds great!
My wife and I have been planning this trip in reverse London to(home)Melbourne for the past 6 months. We noticed that you may be interested in having someone drive your Prado back to Australia. We are actually still looking for a suitable Land Cruiser for the trip which will depart March09. We would love to hear if your interested?
    Happy Trails
