There just might be a day sometime soon where things do not go wrong. Just as the ‘to do’ list ought be getting shorter, it gets longer. Today I thought it a good opportunity to test the data kit on the satellite phone. It ought allow us to keep this site current even when we’re out of mobile phone range. A disc of software came with it. Easy enough - fire up the laptop, insert disc, follow prompts. Until it says “you are about to change your modem settings - click continue to proceed”. Or cancel. I cancelled.

I rang David at the helpdesk of the people who sold us our nice sat phone. “I have never had to do that before” he volunteered. Let me get one from the warehouse and see how it works….”.

So we try again. “Oh, do it this way and then try that way, now plug in the data cord… what do you mean there is no matching slot on your laptop…. oh well, you can’t make it work then….  you could get a USB adaptor but they are not  very reliable….”

So tomorrow, I’m off scouring another electronics shop for another obscure piece of equipment that is determined to make my life hell.

Strength to your arm(s). A fantastic adventure which I’ll follow with interest and envy.
I can understand that elastic list of needs - each day you fill them and each day friends think of something else.Cheers

    Good Luck to you both.

I look forward to following all of the ups and downs of your exciting trip.

I’m very envious, you’ll be visiting many of the places on my “list of places to see before I die”……

While I’m in Cambodia and Laos later this year I’ll keep an eye out for your Prado. ;-)

    Cheers,
    Staeven

Heard you talking about the problem of dodgy fuel. My husband and I have sailed in some parts of the world where fuel is liable to be contaminated. Hint - carry a jar. Check the fuel before it goes in your tank - look and smell. Also carry some pantyhose- makes a good filter before the fuel goes in the tank. Hope you have a great time and that all the arguments a little ones!

    Guys,

Anyone planning to do this sort of thing is clearly quite quite mad… but hey you only live once !

I should mention that I am also planning an overland trip to the UK - although our trip is through Russia from Vladivostok via the (as yet unfinished) Trans Siberian Highway. And my target is my parent’s house in sunny Lancashire rather than London !

Good luck with it all, I will watch your site with interest,

    Carl

Have a fantastic trip. I’ll be living vicariously via this site for the next few months!
I hope I’m not teaching you to suck eggs, but the above comments about dirty fuel struck a rusty chord. The quality of marine diesel fuel is notoriously fickle and West Marine[.com] sell a fuel funnel with a built-in filter for about A$40.00. Search the site for their “fuel filter funnel” and take a look if it takes your fancy, and you have time.

    Hi Jon and Jack,
Wishing you both a fulfilling happy journey and may the bonds that you both share as father and son grow stronger through this adventure. We are here for a fun time, not necessarily a long time, so enjoy! Looking forward to hearing all about your exploits.
    Kindest regards, Lauren X
ps: will miss you from 774 John, its never the same without you!

    Dear Jack and Jon,
Have gone through the sat phone blues 8 years ago when we set up a data connection for our boat. Its great when it finally worked!
    My 10 cents of advice,
get the best email compression software you can as it will save you the cost of it very quickly.
Finally has the prado (excellent choice) got a second/ third fuel filter. A Racor/ Lucas CAV type filter that is cheap to replace saved us from dodgy fuel all over the world1
    good luck
    George

Jon — I hope you have as much joy, pleasure and education as you have given me over many, many years — thanks.

Jack — Ensure that you have enough No-Dad time for self-discovery.
